Prince of Peace (POP) is a Catholic school that educates students beginning at the age of 3 through 8th grade. Location: Prince of Peace Catholic School, Plano, Texas

Position Summary:

The reading specialist ensures that a Catholic learning environment is provided to meet the needs of all students while carrying out the POPCS mission. Responsible for supporting student achievement in the area of reading with special attention to Tier II and III instruction.  Provide individual or small group instruction to students. Responsible for identifying student academic areas of need, using data to create intervention, writing lesson plans, monitoring, reporting and communicating student progress and performance. As a literacy leader, the reading specialist is responsible for supporting and guiding teachers in best practices for literacy instruction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Position:

  • Model the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, reinforce Catholic identity, and promote Prince of Peace Catholic School’s Mission and Philosophy
  • Demonstrates empathy in relations with students, parents, colleagues, and other community members by genuinely considering the feelings, value systems, interests, achievements, and concerns of the person
  • At all times demonstrate professional responsibility in enforcing diocesan and school policies and regulations
  • Develop and maintain a positive classroom environment conducive to effective learning and appropriate for the development of students with dyslexia and those struggling with reading
  • Use the Take Flight curriculum to work with dyslexic students in a small group setting
  • Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction
  • Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to accommodate curricula as needed for students according to guidelines established in the Accommodation Plan
  • Design and implement reading academic interventions using research-based methodology
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned
  • Gather, compile, and disaggregate data; and link that data to student learning and instruction
  • Progress monitor and maintain accurate records of student performance and document interventions and progress on each child
  • Communicate with teachers, administration, and families regarding student progress, establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with students and families based on trust
  • Provide accurate and timely information to parents and students about academic and behavioral performance of students
  • Remain grounded in content standards and objectives in order to facilitate integrated and content-based instruction
  • Gather, compile, and interpret data including but not limited to standardized and other test results for instructional planning, and program evaluation
  • Provide data to school teams and participate in decisions about student progress
  • Assist teachers in selecting, administering, and evaluating results of screening, diagnostic, and progress assessments.
  • Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials
  • Model and coach instructional methods in a variety of settings (whole group and small group) and provide follow up and support
  • Provide feedback to administrators on the school’s literacy programs
  • Conduct staff development activities to assist teachers in helping students improve reading skills
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job related skills

Reporting to the Administration Team, we will look to our Elementary Teacher to

  • Support the school’s mission and be active in the life and culture of the school and parish community
  • Represent POP at community functions as needed
  • Ensure compliance with policies and procedures of Prince of Peace Catholic School and the Diocese of Dallas
  • Initiate or develop other programs relative to the job description
  • Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned by the president/principal/assistant principals

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the policies of the Diocese of Dallas and Prince of Peace Catholic School.

Education & Experience:

  • Applicants must have at minimum a Bachelor’s degree in education or related field
  • Must meet the minimum requirements for teaching as set forth by the Diocese and TCCB ED
  • Applicants must be Certified Academic Language Therapists (CALT)
  • Experience using the Take Flight curriculum
